Slow travel in Portugal

Ribamar, the quieter side of Ericeira.

A residential village close to famous waves, working cafés and long Atlantic cliff paths—without the constant movement of the town centre.

Ribamar is a practical base for travellers who want Ericeira’s coastline without sleeping in the busiest part of town. It is a real village rather than a resort enclave, with supermarkets, cafés, a bakery, pharmacy and cash point mixed into residential streets.

Where Ribamar sits

The village lies north of Ericeira in the parish of Santo Isidoro, within Mafra municipality. Ribeira d’Ilhas—one of the best-known breaks in the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve—is down toward the coast. Coxos and São Lourenço sit farther north.

Published Lalitā House listings described the house as approximately 1.5 kilometres from Ribeira d’Ilhas and 2 kilometres from Ericeira. The exact walking experience depends on the route; coastal paths can be uneven and should not be treated as illuminated urban pavements after dark.

Why retreat guests choose it

Morning

Quieter streets

Less nightlife and traffic than central Ericeira.

Coast

Cliffs & beaches

Easy access to Atlantic scenery and recognised surf breaks.

Daily life

Village basics

Food shops, pharmacy, cafés and bakery close to home.

Balance

Near, not central

Ericeira is close without setting the pace of the day.

Getting around

A car offers the most flexibility for airport transfers, different beaches and evenings in Ericeira. Ride-hailing and taxis may be available but should not be assumed at all hours. Public transport can work for planned journeys, though frequency changes by day and season.

Some visitors cycle between Ribamar and Ericeira, but coastal wind, hills and road confidence matter. If a retreat advertises included beach or surf activities, ask whether it provides transport rather than assuming you can walk with equipment.

The beaches nearby

Ribeira d’Ilhas

The landmark surf beach south of Ribamar has a broad viewing area, facilities and a strong surf identity. Conditions can be powerful; swimming and surfing decisions should follow local safety advice.

Coxos

Closely associated with high-performance surfing and a dramatic rocky bay. It is a beautiful viewpoint, not automatically a beginner beach.

São Lourenço

A wide bay north of Ribamar with room to walk and sit. Like the rest of this Atlantic coast, wind, tide and sea state change the character of the beach quickly.

Weather and what to pack

  • A light windproof layer even in warmer months.
  • Footwear with grip for paths and uneven coastal ground.
  • Sun protection: exposure feels stronger near the water.
  • A warmer layer for evening practice or winter accommodation.
  • Any personal yoga props you rely on, unless supplied.

Ribamar works best when you want the retreat itself to be the centre of the stay and Ericeira to remain an easy option, not a constant distraction.

Planning a yoga stay

Check whether the venue is in Ribamar proper or simply marketed as “Ericeira.” Ask about transfers, walking routes, room heating, bathroom arrangements and exactly which meals are included. Our yoga retreat planning guide covers the full booking checklist.
